How to Set Up IPTV in Fermata Auto (M3U, EPG and Catch-up)

By the Fermata Auto team · Published · 3 min read

One of the most popular reasons to install Fermata is its built-in TV section. With an M3U playlist and, optionally, an XMLTV guide, it turns your phone, Android TV box or car display into a simple live-TV player. This guide explains the terms, shows how to set it up, and covers the problems most people hit.

Important: Fermata provides no channels. Use only playlists and streams you have the legal right to watch. Many countries offer free public broadcasters through official playlists.

IPTV terms in plain English

What you need

  1. Fermata installed from the download page.
  2. The address of an M3U playlist you are allowed to use. Some regional public broadcasters and community projects publish legal lists.
  3. Optionally the address of an XMLTV file for the programme guide.
  4. A reliable internet connection, ideally unmetered.

Adding a playlist

  1. Open Fermata and go to the TV section.
  2. Use the floating button to add a channel list.
  3. Paste the M3U address and save.
  4. Wait a moment while the list loads; large lists with thousands of channels take longer.

On Android Auto, the same TV list appears in the car launcher. If it shows No items, the playlist has not been added or failed to load. See the troubleshooting guide.

Adding the programme guide (EPG)

If your provider offers an XMLTV URL, add it in the IPTV settings so the channels show what is on. A guide is not required to watch, but it makes browsing far nicer. Make sure the channel identifiers in the playlist match those in the guide; mismatches are the main reason a guide appears empty even though it loaded.

Catch-up TV

Catch-up depends on your provider. When the playlist exposes catch-up information, Fermata can use it with the guide, so you can go back and watch a programme that already aired. If your provider does not support it, the option will have nothing to play.

Choosing the right engine

Streams come in different formats and codecs. If one channel stutters or will not start, try switching the player engine in settings:

Frequently asked questions

Does Fermata include IPTV channels?

No. Fermata is only the player. You must supply an M3U playlist from a source you are legally allowed to use.

Does Fermata support an XMLTV programme guide?

Yes. The IPTV addon supports XMLTV EPG and catch-up when the provider supports it.

Which engine is best for IPTV?

ExoPlayer is a good default for HLS streams. Try VLC if a stream will not play.
